ASPERGILLOSIS - Noun: An infection caused by aspergillus, a fungus which grows in decaying vegetation. The spores of this fungus are usually present in the air all the year round. Aspergillus is harmless to healthy people but causes trouble in certain circumstances. It may cause serious and often fatal infection in people with reduced resistance, such as those being treated by anticancer drugs for leukaemia ( Cyclophosphamide ) or by immunosuppressant drugs such as ALG / ATG or Cyclosporin .
Latin - aspergillus = to sprinkle (the fungus looks like a microscopic version of the brushes used for sprinkling holy water which were called aspergilla).
