CHROMOSOME - Noun: Any one of the rod-shaped bodies found in the nucleus of a cell that appear when the cell divides. Chromosomes are derived from the parents and carry the genes that determine heredity, controlling the development of the organism and determining its nature. See Mitosis for picture.
